Volunteers Wanted to Staff OPA Booth at 10/19 Day of the Dog Main St. Event: The biggest day of the year for Main St. is less than two weeks away! Volunteering for an hour or two at the OPA tent is the best way to get to know other people in the organization and community! Main St. Day of the Dog Block Party Next Sunday (10/19) 12-7pm: Main St will be closed to vehicular traffic and transform into a pedestrian paradise all day with vendors and entertainment planned from 12 - 7pm between Pier and Strand. Don't miss the last Santa Monica Block Party of the summer! Join us on Main Street for live music, outdoor art displays, free activities for all ages and a partnership with Day of the Dog, North America’s largest pet festival. See you there! Santa Monica Civic Update: On Tuesday, 10/14, the City Council will vote on whether to extend or end negotiations with RPG to restore the Civic. RPG released preliminary plans for the Civic that are posted at SavetheCivic.org. If you want to let the Council know your thoughts, write them at [email protected].
One-Third of Angelenos Do Not Drive: This article details that suprising statistic and discusses how dangerous LA is for pedestrians. It also highlights how "Over in Santa Monica, the city has managed to strike that balance with a Big Blue Bus adopt-a-stop program where volunteers sign up to give a little extra love to their local bus stop in exchange for (some) free rides. It's all part of the bigger Brighter Blue initiative to improve bus service ahead of upcoming megaevents."
Housing for Mentally Ill Homeless Slated to Open on Ocean Ave.: A county-funded transitional housing program for homeless individuals with serious mental illness is slated to open this month on two adjacent oceanfront facilities. Meanwhile, City officials have no way to stop or significantly alter a "private project that doesn't require nor allow any City oversight." More details here.
Gladstones Rebuild Heads to Coastal Commission Amid Parking and Traffic Concerns: The proposed Gladstones restaurant and parking lot rebuild is on the California Coastal Commission (CCC) agenda for October 8. Commissioners will be asked to approve the replacement of the current 10,183-sq.-ft. facility with a 17,712- sq.-ft. restaurant. Public parking will go from 212 parking spaces to 148 and include a bus turnaround and parking spaces for waiting buses. More details here.
