Planning Commission

Established in 1946, the Planning Commission envisions Santa Monica as a city of wellbeing, sustainability, and equity, and seeks to balance the many needs and priorities within our community in accordance with the City’s General Plan and Specific Plans. The Commission acts through open and civil discourse that is informed by public input, impartial analysis, and best practices in land use and planning.

Responsibilities

  • After a public hearing thereon, recommend to the City Council the adoption, amendment or repeal of the Master Plan, or any part thereof, for the physical development of the City
  • Exercise such control over land subdivisions as is granted to it by the governing body of the City and by the laws of the State of California
  • Make recommendations concerning proposed public works and for the clearance and rebuilding of blighted or substandard areas within the City
  • Exercise such functions with respect to zoning as may be prescribed by ordinance.

Meetings & Minutes

The Planning Commission meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:00 P.M. in the City Council Chambers, City Hall, 1685 Main Street, Santa Monica, California.

Public Comment

Those wishing to give written public comment shall email comments to planningcomment@santamonica.gov. Comments received prior to 12 PM on the day of the meeting will be distributed to the Planning Commission prior to the meeting and posted online. Please note the agenda item in your comments. Comments received after 12 PM on the day of the meeting will be considered part of the record of the proceedings but may not be posted online with the Planning Commission’s agenda prior to the meeting.

REQUESTS TO SPEAK on an agenda item must be submitted on a speaker's request form (“chit”) and submitted to the Commission secretary. All requests to address the Commission on public hearing items must be submitted prior to the Commission's consideration of the item.

Special Assistance for Those Who Cannot Wait to Speak: Members of the public, including those with special needs or without technological resources, who cannot wait to speak on an agenda item may request assistance from the Director by calling (866) 311-7266 or e-mailing planningcomment@santamonica.gov and a member of the City Planning Division will provide assistance in preparing a written statement of testimony for distribution to the Planning Commission.
