James Beard Award-Winning Chef Tim Cushman and Restaurateur Nancy Cushman Bring Gogo Ya and More to Santa Monica

New Restaurant Open Inside Kitchen United Mix

Boston-based husband and wife duo, James Beard Award-winning Chef Tim Cushman and Restaurateur Nancy Cushman have arrived in Santa Monica to roll out the first of their West Coast-based eateries. The Cushmans will open outposts of their popular restaurants, including gogo ya starting on April 18.

Having been fixtures in Boston’s dining scene for over 15 years and currently at the helm of o ya, Hojoko, and Bianca, as well as flagship locations of gogo ya, Ms. Clucks Deluxe, and mr roni cups, the Cushmans are excited to bring their culinary expertise to the vibrant food scene of Los Angeles. The couple now resides bicoastally and considers their Los Angeles debut the start of setting down more permanent restaurant roots in Southern California.

“I’ve always had immense reverence for Los Angeles’ food scene, and can’t wait to be back in my old stomping grounds,” says Chef Tim Cushman, who began his culinary career in Los Angeles under the tutelage of pioneering chefs like Michael Roberts, Roy Yamaguchi, and Nobu Matsuhisa. “I’m proud and humbled to re-join such a vibrant culinary community.”

Gogo ya, the casual offshoot of Boston-based restaurant o ya, is now open for business in Santa Monica. The restaurant specializes in crispy nori sushi tacos and bento bowls, featuring fillings such as torched salmon teriyaki and soy braised shiitake & hon shimeji mushroom.

The Boston-based o ya has been a Semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation’s awards for Outstanding Restaurant in 2018 and 2019. Chef Tim Cushman’s passion for Japanese food and culture is reflected in both o ya and gogo ya.

The Cushmans’ highly anticipated Santa Monica location marks the first time the couple has expanded beyond Boston. Gogo ya will be open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm, with expanded hours coming soon. Delivery and takeout through third-party apps will also be available in the coming weeks. Gogo ya is located inside Kitchen United Mix at 1315 3rd St. on the Santa Monica Promenade.
